ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
What Are We Escaping From?
And where do we go when we long for a break—or just a breath—from the weight of everyday life?
It’s taken me time to recognize the thread that runs through much of my creative work: a longing to—deliberately, and sometimes defiantly—close my eyes to the noise and chaos of the world, and open them again to something softer. A place within that still believes in beauty and wonder.
What once felt embarrassingly naive now feels boldly so. In Sweet Escape, I embrace this defiant naivety—this impulse to find tenderness and color in a world that can be loud and heavy.
Whatever you might need a break from, I invite you to step into this space with me. A space of quiet joy, gentle retreat, and vibrant calm.
Welcome to Sweet Escape.
The Beach House Revisited
The striped beach house first appeared in my work more than ten years ago. At the time, it marked a radical shift—a break from what I’d been doing, and the beginning of something new and exciting. I was drawn to its geometry, especially the shadow under the roof. But it wasn’t just the structure itself—it was the feeling of the scene.
It looked like summer. Like vacation. And that sparked an emotional cocktail I couldn’t ignore: on the one hand, a sense of safety and calm; on the other, a quiet loneliness and a longing for something just out of reach.
Since then, I’ve kept an eye out for motifs with that same dual potential—something that catches my painter’s eye with shape and color, but also carries an emotional undertone that speaks to something deeper. The lighthouse, the swim ring, the golf holes—these are all part of that ongoing visual scavenger hunt that’s become essential to my work.
As David Hockney once said, most painters are lookers, and I’m no exception. But what each of us looks for is different. These visual elements—the ones that shine for me—are where I tend to pause, zoom in, and begin the slow work of making a painting.
Who Makes The Rules?
“Convergence” and “Cluster” are large paintings that explore the concept of play. While they feature forms that could be interpreted as tennis and golf balls, they don’t feel the need to be strictly tied to any specific game. These paintings are playful in their own right, breaking the rules as they go.
In “Convergence,” the balls come so close together at the center that in reality, they could never occupy that space. In “Cluster,” the tennis court’s straight lines are replaced with a circular one, enclosing the balls in a way that defies the traditional game’s structure. As an artist, the freedom to break the rules is essential—but it’s the playful dialogue with those rules that makes it fun.
